If you were in New York during hip-hop’s golden era, you knew the name Irv Gotti. His influence was undeniable. Hip-hop, blended with R&B, dominated the radio waves, mixtapes were everywhere, and DJs like Clue, Funkmaster Flex, and Kid Capri carried the culture forward. Brother Irv Gotti was a major contributor to that era. His passing at an early age reminds us that no matter our success, we must cherish those who are still with us and prioritize our health just as much as we do our careers.

Born Irving Domingo Lorenzo Jr., Gotti started his music career producing tracks for legends like Jay-Z and DMX. In 1998, he co-founded Murder Inc. Records with his brother, Chris Gotti. Through this label, he helped launch the careers of Ja Rule and Ashanti and among others. His impact on hip-hop and R&B was undeniable, and his vision shaped an entire generation of music lovers.

According to some reports, Gotti suffered a minor stroke in the spring of 2024, potentially due to complications from diabetes. While the exact cause of his passing remains unknown, his health struggles bring an important issue to the forefront—diabetes and its effects on the Black community.

Understanding Diabetes and Its Impact

Diabetes is a serious health condition that disproportionately affects Black communities. The disease is influenced by genetics, diet, stress, and overall lifestyle habits. There are two main types:

  1. Type 1 Diabetes – The body does not produce enough insulin, the hormone that helps glucose enter the cells.

  2. Type 2 Diabetes – The body becomes resistant to insulin or does not produce enough of it. This is the most common form and is largely linked to diet and lifestyle.

Symptoms of Diabetes:

  • Extreme hunger

  • Unexplained weight loss

  • Fatigue

  • Blurred vision

  • Increased thirst and urination

When left untreated, diabetes can lead to severe complications, including:

  • Heart disease

  • Stroke

  • Kidney failure

  • Nerve damage

  • Vision problems

  • Foot problems that may lead to amputation

Taking Control of Our Health

The good news is that diabetes can often be managed—and even prevented—with key lifestyle changes. Here are some steps we can take:

  • Exercise Regularly: Physical activity helps regulate blood sugar levels and improve overall health.

  • Fasting and Dietary Changes: Intermittent fasting and a plant-based diet have been shown to significantly improve blood sugar control.

  • Reduce Stress: Managing stress through meditation, prayer, and relaxation techniques can help lower cortisol levels, which affect blood sugar.

  • Eat Whole Foods: Avoid processed foods and refined sugars. Instead, eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.

  • Consult a Knowledgeable Health Professional: Find a doctor who understands both traditional and natural approaches to healing.

A Wake-Up Call for the Black Community

Despite having the most expensive healthcare system in the world, the U.S. still falls short when it comes to preventive healthcare. This is why we must educate ourselves about nutrition and wellness. No one should have to suffer from preventable diseases.

Brother Irv Gotti’s passing serves as a reminder to take our health seriously. We pray for his family’s healing and hope that his life and legacy inspire us not only musically but in how we take care of ourselves and one another. Life is precious. Let’s strive to cherish it by making conscious choices that lead to long, healthy, and fulfilling lives.

Let’s love each other more, support one another, and be mindful of what truly matters in life.
