Anthony Muhammad Build Up To Run For DC Mayor 2026

The Political involvement is a powerful way for individuals who care about their community to make a tangible impact. It ensures that their community thrives and that its members' needs and voices are heard and respected. Those who run for office must be ready to make difficult decisions and stand by them. This requires a strong sense of conviction and the ability to handle pressure.

Running for political office is a collaborative effort that thrives on the active involvement of community organizers and local councilmen/women. These organizations have deep connections within their communities and can mobilize grassroots support, raising awareness about the candidate and the issues they stand for. Their efforts are critical for door-to-door canvassing, organizing rallies, and ensuring high voter turnout.

No one person can make a difference alone. The community must do its part. It's a collective effort to enhance voter engagement, policy development, coalition-building, and overall campaign effectiveness, ensuring that the candidate's vision aligns with the community's needs and aspirations.

Anthony Muhammad is willing to take on those challenges as he begins his uphill journey to become the next Mayor of Washington, D.C. in 2026. Anthony Muhammad is no stranger to politics and his involvement in the community he serves.

Anthony Muhammad served in the United States Air Force Reserve, Washington, DC, from January 1975 to January 1981. It's no coincidence that most veterans become community leaders, using their leadership skills and sense of duty to serve their communities in various capacities, including volunteer work and public service.

Anthony Muhammad was an elected advisory neighborhood commissioner for the District of Columbia Government in Washington, DC, from 1991 - 2019. As a commission chairman, he served as a community liaison and direct point of contact for the city council, where he facilitated and generated the commission agenda.

Anthony Muhammad helped coordinate partnerships with District Government Agencies while engaging and mobilizing constituencies to maximize government response in resolving and assisting residents on zoning issues, economic development, city services, and affordable housing.

Mr. Muhammad believes affordable housing helps individuals and families achieve economic stability by reducing the financial burden of high housing costs. This allows families of all backgrounds to allocate more resources towards essentials like food, healthcare, education, and savings, fostering financial security.

Mr. Muhammad's involvement with economic development was significant in stimulating job creation and providing more employment opportunities for individuals in his district, including those homeless or at risk of homelessness. Mr. Muhammad feels stable employment is crucial for securing and maintaining housing.

As an elected official, Mr. Muhammad was responsible for developing and implementing community fairs, forums, and educational programs. It was essential to Mr. Muhammad that ensuring access to quality education for all, regardless of socioeconomic status, race, or location, was a matter of equity and justice. Addressing disparities in education is crucial for creating a fair and just society.

Anthony Muhammad is known for participating in Washington, DC's Mid-Atlantic Prison Reform Ministry. While visiting the many prison systems, Mr. Muhammad conducted individual and group counseling, didactic lectures, and admission assessments for inmates and adolescents within the prison system and juvenile court services programs.

Mr. Muhammad was responsible for designing programs for a federal grant to provide information about addictions to inmates who do not have the opportunity to attend formal inpatient programs due to overcrowding in the prison system.  Mr. Muhammad also developed and conducted outreach and education programs.   Prison reform for non-violent crimes is essential for creating a more just, effective, and humane criminal justice system. It addresses overcrowding, economic inefficiency, fairness, and social impact while promoting rehabilitation and reducing recidivism. Such reforms can lead to healthier individuals, families, and communities and a safer society overall.

In this exclusive with BLXCR, Mr. Muhammad shared his concerns that the community needs to take advantage of the programs available in the public libraries and recreational facilities. Many recreation centers offer essential community services, such as health screenings, after-school programs, and senior activities. Recreation centers often partner with local schools to provide additional educational and extracurricular activities. Active centers usually have robust volunteer programs, which can strengthen community bonds and encourage civic engagement.

The high utilization of recreation centers demonstrates to city officials and policymakers the community's need for and support for these facilities, making it less likely that they will face budget cuts. Engaged communities are better positioned to advocate for their needs and influence local government decisions. Communities can enjoy numerous physical, social, and economic benefits by actively using and supporting recreation centers. This engagement not only enhances the quality of life for residents but also ensures the continued operation and funding of these vital community resources.

We can't ignore public safety. Mr. Muhammad was very vocal about crime and violence within DC. As a family man himself, most parents want a safe environment for their family. Finding a home in a safe neighborhood with low crime rates may not be available for everyone. With community involvement, the problems of crime and violence can still be solved. Mr. Muhammad shared that we can create a supportive network by developing solid relationships with neighbors and community members.  Participating in community watch programs and staying informed about local safety issues is another way to help reduce crime.

Elected officials should encourage regular meetings, town halls, and community events where politicians, police, and residents can interact, discuss concerns, and collaborate on solutions. It is important to educate law enforcement by providing cultural competency training for officers to better understand and serve diverse communities, fostering mutual respect and understanding.

Mr. Muhammad wants faith-based organizations of all denominations to participate in conflict resolution programs to help reduce crime and violence. Faith-based organizations often promote forgiveness, reconciliation, and compassion, which are foundational to conflict resolution. Their involvement can bring a moral and ethical perspective to the process. Faith-based organizations may advocate for systemic changes that address the causes of conflict, such as poverty, inequality, and discrimination. Their advocacy can influence policy-making and promote lasting solutions.

In closing, Mr. Muhammad believes that when money plays a lesser role in politics, citizens may feel more empowered to participate in the political process, knowing that their voices have a more significant influence. It promotes inclusivity by reducing barriers to entry for candidates and encouraging diverse perspectives in public office. However, achieving a system where money plays a minimal political role takes time and effort. It requires comprehensive reforms, such as campaign finance regulations, public funding of elections, and enhanced transparency measures. Limiting money's influence in politics can create a more level playing field where candidates are judged on their ideas, qualifications, and merits rather than their fundraising prowess.

Anthony Muhammad is looking to earn his way to be a contender by being a Grassroots candidate. His Grassroots campaigns will empower volunteers, activists, and community organizers to participate actively in the political process. Mr. Muhammad is willing to engage in diverse population segments, including marginalized groups and underrepresented communities; as a grassroots candidate, he will promote inclusivity and broaden political participation. Mr. Muhammad's grassroots approach will enhance electoral success and strengthens democratic participation and representation at the local, state, and national levels.
